About Black Women in Aviation (BWIA)

Black Women in Aviation (BWIA) is a nonprofit organization dedicated to empowering Black women and girls—both aspiring and already in the industry—while inspiring all youth through exposure, mentorship, professional development, and career-connected aviation experiences.

We exist to expand access, build confidence, and create clear pathways into aviation and aerospace careers—ensuring that talent is not limited by lack of exposure, representation, or opportunity.

Why We Exist

Black women remain significantly underrepresented across the aviation industry—making up less than 1% of certified pilots, with even fewer represented in maintenance, engineering, and technical roles. This lack of representation is not due to a lack of talent or interest, but rather limited access, visibility, mentorship, and early exposure.

Increasing diversity in aviation is not only a matter of equity—it is essential for innovation, workforce sustainability, and the future of the industry. BWIA addresses this gap by intentionally building a pipeline that supports both entry into and retention within aviation careers.

Why Choose BWIA

At Black Women in Aviation, we understand the reality of being the only Black woman in the room—but we believe it doesn’t have to be isolating or limiting.

Our work goes beyond representation. We focus on empowerment in action—equipping both aspiring aviators and established professionals with the mindset, skills, and support systems needed to navigate challenges, overcome barriers, and advance with confidence.

Through our customized programs and experiences, participants gain tools to:

  • Build resilience and confidence

  • Navigate bias, isolation, and career obstacles

  • Overcome fear and imposter syndrome

  • Develop leadership and professional readiness

  • Access real-world aviation career pathways

Inspiring the Next Generation

In addition to supporting professionals already in the field, BWIA is deeply committed to inspiring and preparing the next generation of aviation leaders.

Our youth-focused programs introduce students to aviation early—through hands-on exposure, industry engagement, and career-connected learning experiences. By fostering confidence and a growth mindset at the earliest stages, we help young people see aviation not as a distant dream, but as a real and attainable future.

Our Impact Approach

BWIA bridges the gap between interest and opportunity by connecting:

  • Exposure → Awareness

  • Mentorship → Confidence

  • Professional Development → Career Readiness

  • Community → Retention and Growth

Whether supporting a student discovering aviation for the first time or a professional navigating advancement in the industry, BWIA meets individuals where they are—and helps them move forward with purpose.

Empowering black women to soar to new heights in aviation and aerospace.

BWIA is more than an organization—we are a mission-driven community committed to empowering Black women and girls at every stage of their aviation journey while inspiring and engaging all youth through meaningful exposure to aviation and aerospace careers. Through intentional outreach, we strengthen the aviation pipeline by delivering career-connected experiences, mentorship, professional development, and scholarship opportunities that support workforce readiness and long-term success.

Whether supporting youth as they explore aviation for the first time or advancing Black women already navigating the industry, BWIA provides the resources, mentorship, and community needed to grow, lead, and thrive. Together, we are expanding access, breaking barriers, and helping more individuals see aviation as an attainable and sustainable pathway.
